Today, 30th of January, there  will be a new moon.As this is the second new moon in one month it is called a black moon.

It’s interesting that the  two new moons we have had this month have also been super moons.

A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The term “supermoon” is not astronomical, but originated in modern astrology.

2014 has five super moons in all, the two new moons in January also the full moons of July, August and September.

Super moons are said to have a greater effect on earths oceans, so we might need expect higher tides

We won’t have two super moons in one calender month again until January 2018.
