Pink Moon Rising
The more or less “official” nickname for April’s full moon is the Pink Moon…
This year it coincides with a lunar eclipse – when the sun, moon and earth are in perfect alignment, causing the earth’s shadow to fall on the moon – so for some Pink will turn to Red….
Some sources suggest that this name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. The Pink Moon of April is sometimes referred to by names associated with other signs of full spring. In other cultures, this full moon is sometimes call the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
This full moon is also the Paschal Full Moon of 2014, defined in Christian tradition as the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Easter is always celebrated on the Sunday immediately follow the Paschal Full.
