TRTZ no 39 : “McMysticism – The Path of Instant Enlightenment”

The Qabbala  is a 13th Century ‘mystical system’ based around Jewish teachings; the ‘inner secrets of the Torah and forms the basis of western magical tradition.

It is also a system which has gained celebrity endorsement and, according to some, cult status.

We will be looking at this system in detail as well as considering the apparent desire for somee to seek instant enlightenment – the path of McMysticism.

Weird news

November 28th:  British company Captive Media is believed to have developed a urinal mounted, urine-controlled games console for men.  The user is presented with three targets to aim for in the urinal that read ‘Start’, ‘Left’ and ‘Right’ and by using an infra-red device the console can detect the accuracy of the falling urine. The game available to play include a skiing challenge and a pub quiz style multiple choice.  It should be possible to post scores to Twitter and keep track of your score on the live messageboard.  Not only this, but the concept is hoping to reach women too, Gordon MacSween of Captive Medisa says.  “We are also installing units in ladies’ toilets, to address the issue of long waiting times.”

AND now visitors at the The Exhibit Bar in Balham can play one of three games every time they use a urinal.

The video game has been trialled in a bar in Cambridge since mid-July and it has proved to be both popular and profitable.

One of the game’s co-founders, Gordon MacSween, was not sure how the public would react to the game initially. But as soon he saw the game on trial at a bar in Cambridge he knew he was on to something good.

The game was designed to create a valuable media opportunity from the 55 seconds the average male spends while he pees just staring at a blank wall.

29th November :  Police shut the M1 in South Yorkshire between junction 32 and 33 at Sheffield at around 10.15pm last night following the incident, which saw the vehicle crash and and spill its contents onto both carriageways.

Twitter quickly picked up on the story and spawned hundreds of good, bad and terrible responses…

November 22nd:  A couple from Utah claims that the new Twilight film gave (They both wish to remain anonymous) the husband a seizure.  During the notorious ‘birthing’ scene, they claim the husband, who had never had a seizure prior to this, began shaking violently and ‘mumbling different noises’.  The manager at the megaplex where the event took place believes that it is possible for the film to have caused his seizure, but as such there is no other evidence and only one other unconfirmed case of the scene having had the same effect on anybody else.  The Comments on the story however, tell a different story, many writing of their friends and relatives and even themselves suffering seizures after seeing the film, both in those with a history and those without.  It seems somewhat open to speculation at the minute.

: The Ruhr region of Germany is under siege!  The Harvestmen, also known as Daddy-long-legs (In some parts of the world at least, Daddy-Long-Legs is also a name used for the cranefly and the cellar spider Pholcus phalangioides), are cropping up everywhere it seems and becoming something of a nuisance as residents discover and remove them in clumps of hundreds.  While not a true spider, any arachnophobe would be forgiven for fearing them as they lope through gardens and across walls in a Martian-like manner, and there is a common misconception that they (A misconception also shared with the cranefly and the cellar spider) possess the most lethal venom in the world but are incapable of biting anyone.  Rest assured, they do not! (Good news especially for my pets, who regularly eat them!)  The influx of the arachnids in Germany will dwindle over the winter months, but there will be plenty of eggs waiting for the next warm season.

November 23rd  If you’re not an octopus fan, look away now!  A family on a day out at the beach spotted an octopus pursuing a crab in a large rock pool and like most of us would, whipped out their cameras.  The octopus then proceeded to clamber out of the pool and slide with surprising dexterity over the dry surrounding rocks, much to the apparent astonishment of those watching.  Apparently, this behaviour has been previously documented in octopuses. Reports range from escapes from fishing nets and hobbling about just out of reach of crewmen on boat decks to escapes from their tanks at aquariums, only to be discovered in another tank eating the residents!  Octopuses are difficult to study as they have a relatively short lifespan and are reclusive creatures, so there may be much more we still haven’t discovered about them.  You can watch this particular footage here

November 26th:  Markus Thompson was scuba diving in Deep Bay (Outside Vancouver) when he discovered a Canon EOS 1000D camera sitting at the bottom of the sea.  He checked the SD card, probably without much hope, but discovered that he was able to retrieve the pictures on his computer and that they dated back to last year, meaning that the camera had been sitting there for some time!  Using Google Plus, Thompson posted a few details online and within a day he was able to track down the owner of the camera and send him his long awaited photos!

November 27th:  Mexico City broke the record for the largest ‘Zombie walk’ today after beating the current record holder Asbury Park in America, where 4093 zombies lumbered through the area in 2010. Brisbane, Australia are also  rumoured to have broken that record after one group claimed to have had a 8000 individual headcount for their zombie walk in October.  Who will step up to the challenge next?

Rosie Brovent of Dayton, Ohio, went to get a tattoo from Ryan Fitzgerald, her then boyfriend, she had hoped for a scene from Narnia but agreed that it was up to Fitzgerald to design the overall tattoo.  Fitzgerald had apparently discovered Brovent had cheated on him with a friend of his took this rare opportunity to exact revenge on her.  What Brovent ended up with was an enormous, full-back tattoo of a pile of excrement.  Brovent has since tried to have Fitzgerald charged with assault but as Fitzgerald got her to sign a consent form allowing him to have ‘artistic discretion’ this didn’t hold up in court.  Brovent is now suing him for $100,000.

Lost Disney cartoon shows how Mickey Mouse was originally Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
A long-lost Disney cartoon that features a character who became Mickey Mouse has been discovered in the archives of a British firm.
The cartoon, called Hungry Hobos, was made in 1928 but the original film of it has been missing since before the Second World War.

The black and white film starred Oswald the Lucky Rabbit who was the prototype of Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney made 26 films with Oswald in before he started his own company and changed the character into a rodent.

The features and behaviour of Oswald are clearly those of Mickey Mouse – a character that has endured ever since.

The whereabouts of the five minute silent cartoon has baffled experts who believed it would never be seen again.

But, incredibly, it has turned up in the collection of the Huntley Film Archives in Herefordshire where it had been sat for decades.

Amanda Huntley, who runs the company, said a colleague stumbled upon it on a shelf and out of curiosity ‘Googled’ its name and realised it was a “lost” classic.

Brazil switches on giant floating Christmas tree. Rio de Janeiro marks the start of the Christmas season with the world’s first ever floating Christmas tree measuring 85 metres.
One hundred thousand people flocked to see the offical festive switch-on of the metal structure floating on Rio’s Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.

The 542 tonne structure, wrapped in 3.3 million light bulbs was the centrepiece of an eight minute fireworks show, which has become one of the city’s main tourist attractions.

Pagan stone circle built at US Air Force training academy

The US military has built a stone circle in its Air Force academy to give pagans, druids and witches somewhere to practice their religion.
The Colorado base has spent around £50,000 building the Stonehenge-like structure to allow witches to cast spells, and pagans to form “circles of power” by night.

it is situated on top of a wooded hill and includes a fire pit.

The academy says it is for cadets who practice ‘Earth based’ religions including druids, witches and North American faiths.

Despite the expenses it is believed only three out of the 4,300 cadets have openly admitted that they are pagan.

Bob Barr, a former Republican congressman, campaigned to ban witches from the military, saying: “What’s next? Will armoured divisions be forced to travel with sacrificial animals for Satanic rituals? Will Rastafarians demand the inclusion of ritualistic marijuana cigarettes in their rations?”

The main theme of the show :  McMysticism…

Some thoughts about the desire for enlightenment and the degree to which that search for some is about off-the-shelf spirituality and quick-fix Karma-Mechanics.

We will focus particularly on The Qabbala – a system which has received celebrity endorsement and, according to some, acquired CULT status – something which is completely alien to the history and purpose of this mystical system.
